I recently had the opportunity to talk to one of the founders of a great site called Runway Rundown that I have been following for quite some time. They post runway looks and show you how to get those looks a lot cheaper. Some of the designers they have used for inspiration include Balmain, Jill Stuart, Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferrertti, Marchesa, Chanel, Marc Jacobs and so many more. They are DEFINITELY worth the visit, so make sure to check the site out.
Here is my interview with Kim, the Co-Founder, since it is so long I had to put some under the cut, so click read more to finish reading!:
Why did you decide to start Runway Rundown? I was frequently asked by friends and strangers where my outfit was from. After explaining where I put the outfit together and from what inspiration they were usually floored. I figured I had something that I could turn into a service and at the same time really enjoy what I was doing.
What are your long term goals for the site? I would love to see us flip the switch on the fashion blogging world and start a new craze appealing to editorial outlets. I think Runway Rundown has the potential to be an extension of an online editorial (ELLE, Teen Vogue, Etc) as a subscription or weekly column. But aside from that I would love to see Runway Rundown grow into the mens category and even possibly home goods.
Why should people check out the site? Because like I found myself many a time, I didn't have time to page through magazines and check online stores for new and sale priced inventory. I am doing the research for you. You should come to the site knowing that we will have something to offer anyone even if you don't know what you are looking for.
What is your favorite new trend for this season? From Sheer Maxi Dresses, to Eclectic Prints, to Wide Leg/Highwaisted 70's Trousers, to Bright Bold Colors, there are so many exciting trends for Spring 2011. If I had to choose one I would say you will see a bit of Asian influence this season in the material coloration and the silhouettes of the collections. Carolina Herrera, for example, sent the most amazing collection down the runway inspired by the traditional dress in Korea. There is a lot of obi style draping, botanical hand paintings and structured pencil skirts.
Do think this trend has the potential to stick around for seasons to come? I think its a trend that will be touched on again but never as a craze or a fad. Its an entirely different appreciation for the art form in Women's dressing.
What is the one accessory you think every girl needs? A great chunky bib necklace. This is a statement piece that can bring any outfit together, and they don't call it a 'statement' piece for no reason. It is sure to catch anyone's eye and can easily take a so-so outfit to over the top!
What designers are your favorites to do Looks for Less for? I really like to mix it up between 'fast-fashion' (Forever 21, Urban Outfitters) and 'Contemporary' (Alice + Olivia, Aqua) brands just to cover the board from high to low. Right now I think ASOS always has a really wide selection of on trend pieces and they are very affordably priced. For go to basics Forever 21 and American Apparel usually get it right and for a little pricier I really think the Aqua for Bloomingdales line is worth the price considering the quality.
What are some of your favorite fashion blogs? I admit that I don't read fashion blogs very much. When I'm online I'm going through runway collections and shopping e-retail sites. But when I have down time and am looking to find a little inspiration online the Sartorialist usually does it for me.
What are your top tips for fashionable girls that want to find designer looks for less? Stick with Runway Rundown, we are doing the research for you. And when you're ready to buy there is usually always an online coupon floating around somewhere so always Google "coupon code + the store you are shopping at" and you will most likely come up with free shipping or 20% off your purchase. Last but not least, "Imitation is the best form of flattery," and you'll especially feel good about yourself if you've managed to put the look together with money to spare.
Make sure to visit Runway Rundown!
